Vladimir Markov
Itkutsk, Russia
I was educated as an aeroplane designer but work as a commercial fly
tier while living with my family in Itkutsk, Russia. My home waters include
Lake Baikal and several popular Siberian rivers. I have fished since a teenager, using many different methods, but prefer fly fishing for grayling,
trout, and lenok. I enjoy fishing new areas so travel as much as possible.
Note by Ed Gallop: Vlad is one of the best fly tiers I know.
His superior talent is expressed in his unique tying style. He has published articles in the March '99 issue of Fly Fisherman Magazine and
also in the fall and spring '99 issue of Fly Fishing & Tying Journal. His flies have appeared in volume six of Patterns of the
Masters and in the 2000 publication of FFF's Fly Pattern Encyclopedia. Vlad's talent is also expressed in his drawing renditions of flies that
have also been published.
Aisit Vlad's web site at www.markov.baikal.ru. It is a terrific web site and you owe it to yourself to take a look.
It is possible to purchase some of Vlad's unique flies. He sells them on his web-site at a very reasonable price.

for your tying needs.![]()
Hook:
TMC 2487, Mustad 80250 or TMC 200R, size 10 to 18.
Thread: 6/0 or 8/0 (color to match the body).
Tail: 2 or 3 Woodduck, partridge, or hackle fibers.
Nymphal Skin: Antron dubbing fibers or Z-lon.
Nymphal Thorax: Antron and Super-Fine dubbing (blended).
Nymphal Legs: 6 Partridge or hen hackle fibers.
Rib: Fine silver wire (optional).
Body of Dun: Biots, Antron yarn (1/3 to 1/4 thickness of
yarn), twisted or dubbing.
Wing of Dun: 3 to 4 CDC feathers.
Thorax of Dun: Antron and poly dubbing (blended).
Note: Parts of this pattern represent parts of a natural may fly in the
act of emerging. It can be tied in any color to match local hatches. ![]()
Hook:
Scud hook.
Tail: Hackle fibers.
Legs: Thread.
Body: 5 Minute epoxy.
Antennae: Same as tail.
Note: Body tied with thread and filled 5-minute epoxy. To color the
body cut antron dubbing and put in epoxy. It is a very productive fly in many rivers and lakes. ![]()
Hook:
Silver Holey Head hook, #12.
Case: Crocheted 4 sections of Antron yarn or mouline (sand, amber,
brown, black).
Legs: Deer hair or hackle fibers.
Note: This pattern looks like a bead head fly but doesn't catch on the
bottom of stream because point of hook is directed upwards. The fly has an upside down position. Holey Head Hook design was
developed on the basis of Mormyshkas, an old Russian lure created for ice fishing. To find the right color and shade I bring the natural
cased caddis to the craft store to compare the mouline Madeira (made in Germany). ![]()
Hook:
Holey Head Hook, size 10 to 18, (brass or silver crown).
Thread: 6/0 or 8/0 (to match body color).
Tail: Animal guard hairs or hackle fibers.
Rib: Wire or monofilament.
Body: Dubbing.
Wing Case: Turkey quill.
Thorax: Here's ear or squirrel dubbing.
Note: Your choice of color![]()
Hook:
Mustad 94831 (sized to match hoppers in your area).
Thread: 6/0 or 8/0.
Body: Closed-cell foam.
Coating: Five-Minute epoxy (painted the correct
color).
Buck Legs: Green hackle stems (clipped and
knotted).
Front Legs: Moose hair.
Wing: Turkey quill.
Antennae: Badger hair.
Note: Paint the colors to match hoppers in your area. ![]()
Hook:
TMC 2302, size 8 to 16 (weighted).
Thread: 6/0 Black.
Tail: Pheasant tail fibers.
Skin: Hare's ear antron dubbing fibers.
Aft Thorax: Dubbing.
Aft Legs: Partridge, or hackle fibers.
Rib: Fine flat gold tinsel.
Abdomen: Pheasant tail.
Wing Case: Turkey quill.
Fore Thorax: Dubbing.
Fore Legs: Partridge, or hackle fibers.
Note: Periodic moult of nymphs for mayflies as well as many other creatures such crayfish, shrimps, etc., is a very dangerous period. Their
mobility is very restricted while their chitin cover is soft. Predators, of course, try to use it in their best interest.
Another factor is that the moult of nymphs occurs often. Flies imitating this stage are shown in the photos. I often used such patterns in my fishing. ![]()
Hook:
Mustad 94840, sizes 12-18.
Thread: Danville's 6/0.
Abdomen: Deer hair.
Legs: Deer hair.
Head: Deer hair.
Note: Select colors to match the ants in your area. ![]()
Hook:
TMC 2487, Mustad 80250, size 16 to 10.
Thread: Cream, 6/0.
Tail: Rust fibers from Antron dubbing.
Underbody: Red dubbing.
Body: Pearlusent Flashabou-accent.
Thorax: Peacock herl..
Post: White calf tail or white foam.
Hackle: Grizzly hackle (parachute style).
Note: There is an attractive emergence pattern without big innovations.
The Pearl borrows a silhouette from the Klinkhamer Special which also has a humpbacked shrimp hook. The Pearl body represents an insect's air bubble.
The Pearl also have a attractive color combination - grizzly, red, pearl, rust. ![]()
Hook:
TMC 400T, Mustad 80150, size 10 to 14.
Thread: Black 6/0.
Tail: Hare's ear guard fibers.
Aft Body: Hare's mask fur (with lots of guard
hairs).
Fore Body: Light yellowish-olive yarn (or your choice of
color).
Wing: Yarn from forebody.
Hackle: Cream, grizzly (or your favorite).
Note: This fly pattern is tied in impressionistic style. It is the simplified emerger
imitating many insect emergence processes: Mayflies, caddisflies, gnats.
To place the fly properly on the surface film, the fly tail and body should not be smeared
with floatant. The fly hackle must lie on the surface film. The wing is in the air and the
rest of it lies under the surface film. Aft body and tail represent a nymph or an insect
pupa. Forebody and wing represent a "new-born" insect. All this attracts very large fish.

Hook:
Mustad 94840, size 10 to 18 (form a silhouette of the fly with
wire bending pliers).
Thread: 6/0.
Tail: Fibers from callibaetis antron dubbing and 1
pearlesent
Flashabou (for accent).
Body: Dubbing of choice.
Hackle: Hackle of choice.
Wing: Deer hair of choic.
Notes: This fly is a combination of many ideas and thoughts that came
together after tying and testing many patterns. All of these patterns represent
different stages of the various life cycles of the insects that make up the main
food of fish. These may be emerging, laying eggs, crippled etc.
At all of these stages the insects are equally vulnerable and may be eaten by fish.
Vulnerable Caddis is an attempt to represent all of these situations in one fly.
It is good enough for many waters and in addition to my home it has been tested at Henry's Fork in the States.
I fish it the whole season as a dry fly. ![]()
Hook:
Mustad 80250, sizes 16 to 6
Thread: Brown, #6/0

Legs: Deer hair
Head: Brown float foam ![]()
Hook:
Mustad 94831.
Tail: Rust Antron yarn.
Aft Hackle: Brown hackle.
Body: Yellow dubbing.
Fore Hackle: Grizzly hackle.
Wing: Deer hair.
Note: The Hatching Renegade was developed in 1998 on basis of
the Super Renegade. It imitate parts of the natural hatching insect.
I've tested the Orange Hatching Renegade on the South Fork of Snake River and also on a lot of Siberian rivers.
