AKA: DT5 - Memphis, Tennessee
Born
and raised in Memphis, I'm a middle aged tax business lawyer who is expressing
the mandatory mid-life crisis by fly fishing and tying flies. Hey!
It could be worse. I doubt, however, that it could be more fun. My
little red sport car sits in the garage gathering dust while my old Jeep Grand
Wagoneer keeps piling up the miles going to the river.
The photograph was taken by Catskill Bill while I was sitting next to Poul Jorgensen watching Ralph Graves tie a soft hackle at the Catskill Fly Fishing Museum, shortly after catching a nice brown on a deer hair beetle tied by Mary Dette. All in all, it was a pretty nice day.

Maybe it's
because John Mosby (AKA: Gray Ghost) was my all time favorite Civil War hero as
a kid, or because I'm a sucker for history and tradition, but Carrie Stevens'
pattern has NEVER failed to produce a fish whenever I've used it. It's
gotten so bad that I almost flinch when I tie it on, for fear of breaking the
streak. I guess you could fish this fly with graphite but the magic is only
guaranteed while using an old Winston hollow built 8'6" for 7. Thread:
White 6/0 to wrap shank for under-body (so floss stays true when wet), then
switch to black 6/0 or 8/0 for tying in throat, wing, and shoulder assemblies. Tag
and Rib: Silver mylar. Body:
Orange floss. Throat:
Peacock herl, white polar bear, and golden pheasant crest. Wings:
Two dun hackles on each side with golden pheasant crest in between. Shoulders:
Silver pheasant with Jungle Cock eyes. Select One of Russell's

This is my new #1
favorite "go-to" fly for slick, shallow water with over-fished,
post-doctorate school trout. A very sincere thank you to Paco for his
pattern and his very rare feathers to tie it with. (Best used with Ron Kusse's 7'
for 4 hex rod) Thread:
Gudebrod 10/0. Egg
Sac: Dubbed beaver (green, yellow, or dark olive). Body:
Dubbed beaver (tan, gray, dark gray, or black). Wing:
Paco's Coq de Leon. Hackle:
Brown hackle of good quality wrapped collar style. Paco used Coq de Leon,
and trims to size, but I can't bring myself to clip that beautiful hackle yet. Note:
I prefer the pattern and color of Pardo Coq de Leon for the wings. Clip,
don't pull off fibers, and stack them to be even. Select One of Russell's

TMC 101 size 16. Thread:
Yellow Bennechi 12/0. Tail:
Ginger hackle fibers over a ball of dubbing (A.K.'s style). Body:
Sulphur quill. I prefer cream-yellow rather than orange-yellow. Wing:
Light dun hen hackle fibers. Hackle:
Ginger, wrapped parachute style arount the wings. Note:
You may prefer to tie in a split tail but I don't. Select One of Russell's

A shameless
double theft on this one - A.K.'s quill body and hen hackle wings with John
Gierach's parachute style using the hen wings as the post. It feels just
right on the end of Per Brandin's 7'6" for 5 quad, unless you would permit
me to borrow your Payne 101.
