Paul
Dieter (aka: Bubba)
Seattle, Washington
I've been fly fishing most of my life, starting very young in the mountains of Idaho
with my family. I started tying flies when I was about 12 but didn't have much of
anyone to learn from and soon gave up tying. I took it up again in the late 80's when
I got back into fly fishing after spending 4 years in Asia. That was in a way my
rebirth into fly fishing as an adult.
My tying rational revolves around my enjoyment of building as much of my equipment as possible and a deeply ingrained 'Scottish' thrift.
My material choices fall heavily into road kill, hunter's left over and the use of craft and industrial
materials adapted to my needs. I am a long time student of appropriate technology.
I often don't emphasize color as much as tonal qualities and anatomical patterns (i.e.
ribbing).

Hook: TMC
200BL.
Thread: Orange.
Tail/Antenna: Peacock biot.
Underbody: Golden brown dubbing, mix brushed
out and protruding from the latex overwrap.
Overbody: Latex strip cut from a dental dam and folded over
with folded edge exposed. Colored to suit with markers.
Rib: Copper wire.
Thorax: Golden brown dubbing mix.
Wingcases: Tyvek house wrap.
Legs: Super floss (or your preference).
Note: My
flies are under constant revisions and this is my latest Bubba's Stone (2003).
It is tied the same as the original above except for a time saving chamois
strip abdomen with vinyl rib ribbing and tied upside down on the hook to "float"
right side up. The chamois is colored slightly with a marker prior to
wrapping.
Pieces of tyvek (taken
from building scraps or post office envelopes) can be 'sponge painted' in
blotchy patterns with waterproof acrylic paints ahead of time and stored for use
final black markings can be added with a fine point sharpie. Trim out
desired shapes for wing cases. The forward cases are one piece of Tyvek
with a thin 'waist' area for the first tie and a small tab at the hook eye for
the final tie in. It is also a good idea to give them a sealer coat after
they are tied in to keep the Tyvek from de-laminating.
This fly grew out
my experiences on the Yakima River where stones are present year round and can
be the key to very successful days. The fish however can be very picky and
I learned that a good impersonation will far out fish a more impressionistic
pattern. I have worked on this fly for about 4 years (early versions had
crocheted bodies) and it will certainly continue to evolve. My goals were
to create a pattern that was somewhat realistic, utilized a limited amount of
pricey fly shop materials, and could be easily tied in 10min or less.
These are heavily weighted and of course you loose a few so you need to keep the
time investment reasonable, but my success rate fishing with these has offset
the time I take to tie them.

LBJ (Little Brown Job)
Tier: Paul Dieter

Hook:
Tiemco 2457.
Thread: Black 8/0.
Abdomen: Olive or green thread base with Rainy's Stretch Flex
wrapped over after ribbing.
Ribbing: Copper wire.
Thorax: Brown dubbing.
Note 1: This falls under the simpler is better category. I've had great success
with this before BWO hatches. I don't go for too many fly shop synthetic materials but the stretch flex wrapped over wire gives me a 'look' I really
like. If anyone can give me a non fly tying market substitute for this material
I would love to hear about it.
Note
2: Below picture is tied with black thread body and gray squirrel
thorax.

Hook:
Tiemco 900BL #10-12.
Thread: Black 6/0.
Tail: Green Microfilbetts.
Rib: Super floss.
Abdomen: Dark green Antron dubbing.
Thorax: Lighter green dubbing.
Hackle: Green grizzly.
Wing: White tulle (light weight with sparkles).
Notes: I believe tulle makes the best possible parachute wings.
Not only in it's visual qualities but in it's ability to form a tight and sturdy post for the
hackle.

October Caddis or Golden Stone Recipe
Hook:
Tiemco 200RBL
Thread: 6/0 Orange
Tail: Deer or Elk
Abdomen: Orange Antron and Olive Hackle (palmered)
Thorax: Peacock Herl and Olive Grizzly (palmered)
Wing: Tulle (stiff underwing), Deer or Elk
(overwing)
Notes: The tulle downwing takes an already productive attractor pattern (stimulator) and turns it into a versatile imitator pattern. Good for hoppers and stones. Tied above is an October Caddis or Golden Stone pattern. Below is a Hopper or October Stone recipe. I trim the bottom of the hackles to get the fly to float lower and more consistently upright.
