Hermann Schibli
Germany
Although
native of Germany, most of my 50 years have been spent in the USA, where I started
fly fishing in
Michigan and New Hampshire. I now live (temporarily) in Germany, but I do most of my angling in close-by Austria, fishing for bows, browns, and grayling,
preferably with bamboo and dries. I periodically return to the States to fish with
my buddies over there.
I've been an amateur fly tier for about 18 years. I don't specialize in anything,
but tie whatever the occasion calls for, be it small parachutes and CDC's for the
Austrian streams or big gaudy flies for Alaska. One of my favorite patterns is the
Montana Variant (a Montana Nymph and Wooly Bugger hybrid), pictured below.
It has worked well for me both in Europe and the States.

Bead: Gold #3/32.
Tail: Red biots.
Ribbing: Fine round gold tinsel.
Body: 5 strands of peacock herl.
Legs: Soft brown hackle.
Wings: White biots.
Notes: This is the standard pattern of the Prince Nymph with two exceptions: I tie a few hackle fibers at the throat instead of a full collar, and instead of brown biot tails I use red biots. I found this variation to be quite successful.

The Wooly Worm is an old pattern tied with a red yarn tail, black chenille body palmered with grizzly hackle, and I added the silver bead for the head.
I've had so much good luck with this fly that it might be worthwhile displaying it here.

Note: After tying in the tail, continue wrapping the foam as an underbody. The hackle can be sparse, as the foam adds extra floatability.

hump folded back over on itself, and wings).

Hook:
#14 Mustad 79580, TMC 5263, or similar.
Bead: 3/32 gold bead.
Thread: Black 6/0.
Tail: Black marabou, with a few strands of crystal
flash.
Body: Black dubbing or Uni-Yarn.
Ribbing: Flashabou or iridescent green ribbing.
Thorax: Yellow dubbing with palmered black hackle.
Wing Case: Black raffia or bug skin, coated with
lacquer.
Notes: This fly is my off shoot of the Montana Nymph. I tie it with dubbing or
uni-yarn instead of chenille to get a better tapered body. It is most productive when fished deep, therefore, besides the weight of the bead head, I often
add fine lead wire wraps.

Thread: Brown 6/0.
Tail: Brown ostrich.
Underbody: Two or three strands of spectra flash.
Body: Brown hackle, trimmed.
Collar: Brown ostrich.
Note: The trimmed hackle also lets you use up some of the
large feathers that otherwise are usually left over on the cape.
This is a ridiculously simple fly to tie but has proven itself quite effective.

Serendipity (Beadhead)
Tier: Hermann Schibli
Hook:
TMC 2457 size 14 to 16.
Head: Tungsten bead, size 3/32.
Body: Olive or dark brown Z-lon, twisted into a chord (Antron
works too).
Thorax: White deer hair with a little stub left on top.
Note: The Serendipity is essentially a chironimid puppa
pattern. The tungsten version, in my experience, is best fished with a
strike-indicator.
The below pictured fly has a darker olive brown body.
