Tier: Ed Gallop
Hook:
Dry.
Post: Antron, Z-Lon, deer or calf hair.
Tail: Mixed brown and grizzly hackle fibers.
Body: Gray dubbing..
Hackle: Brown and grizzly mixed.
Note: This is the parachute version of the popular Adams, which was created by Leonard Halladay in the early 1920's and named after Charles Adams, an angler who gave the fly a reputation.
This is an imitation of several mayfly hatches. I doubt you will find many anglers without one in their fly box.

Black Fur Ant
Tier: Ed Gallop
Hook:
Dry or wet.
Body: Black dubbing tied fore and aft.
Hackle: Black, tied sparse at mid section of the body.
Two small clumps of black fur dubbing with black hackle in the middle makes a great ant imitation.
Although there are many different materials used to tie ants, this is probably the most popular of all bodies. However, with the introduction of foam flies, the reputation may soon change in favor of foam.
Ants are found in abundance on trees and other overhanging vegetation and frequently fall or are blown into the water. In some situations I've seen so many ants in the water that fish began feeding on them selectively, ignoring other insects.
Anglers that don't fish ants should consider giving them a try because fish find ants an attractive menu entree.

Gray Duster
Tier: Ed Gallop
This popular
fly is tied with gray rabbit dubbing and badger hackle. There are many variations, such as added flash wings, parachutes, and even tails,
but I believe this is the most traditional.
If you have information about the history of this fly please send it to classroom@flytyingworld.com so it can be added to this page.

Cow Dung
Tier: Ed Gallop
Hook:
Dry fly.
Thread: Gold with Black head.
Body: Gold floss.
Wing: Red duck quill.
Hackle: brown.
If you have spent much time traversing cow pastures I'm sure you can join me in saying you have stepped in cow dung, manure, pods, chips, or whatever you call it. Even if you haven't stepped in one you have probably noticed large amounts of flies that seem to find pleasure feasting and mating there. Nature is amazing sometimes.
These unique terrestrials are in the Diptera order known as True Flies and have the nickname of "Cow Dung Flies." When fishing waters near cow pastures you should be prepared to imitate them because they frequently find their way into the water and fish love them.
Taff Price used mixed yellow and olive seal's fur for the body but this fly is tied with a yellowish olive floss. The ginger hackle, and cinnamon hen wings are the same. Seal's fur has become very rare and is expensive when a supply is found.

Royal Coachman
Tier: Ed Gallop
This
is probably the most famous and recognized dry fly in the world. It has been around
since the late 1870's and many variations have been created, each retaining the
unique characteristics of red floss sandwiched by peacock herl for the
body. In fact, the Royal Coachman is a variation of the Coachman, which
has a solid peacock herl body. It dates back to the early 1800's. Tier
John Haily decided to give the Coachman a fancier look by adding the
"Royal" touch of red floss.
Many tiers use less hackle and even eliminate the quill wing. The hackle here is almost thick enough to be a Wulff but the quill wings (instead of hair) dictate it not to be a Wulff.

Joe's Hopper
Tier: Ed Gallop

This is a variation of Joe Brooks hopper that was one of the first popular hopper pattern. The foam body provides better floatation.

Appetizer (Variant)
Tier: Ed Gallop
Hook:
Wet - Size 8
Tail: Mixed orange and green dry hackle fibers.
Body: White chenille.
Rib: Oval silver tinsel.
Beard: Mixed orange and green hackle fibers.
Wings: White marabou herl with some silver Krystal Flash.
Note: The tail and beard of the original has some silver mallard breast feather fibers added, and the wing has some gray squirrel overlaying the marabou.
The original Appetizer was created by Bob Church in the early 70's and is considered by many as the first British fly containing marabou. This version has a little Krystal Flash added.

Tier: Ed Gallop
Hook:
Dry #16 to #18.
Thread: Primrose yellow Pearsalls Gossamer silk.
Tail: Light shade of pardo Coq de Leon or tail of
choice.
Body: Three overlapping wraps of primrose
yellow Pearsalls Gossamer silk, the last wrap
touch dubbed with cream snowshoe rabbit foot
underfur.
Hackle: One wrap of gray partridge neck feather.
Head: Primrose yellow Pearsalls Gossamer silk.
Note: When the rises on a Sulphur hatch are not
interested in a dry fly its time to imitate the emerger
just under the surface film where they hatch. I've
had good success with various nymphs and
emergers but sometimes this little fly pattern I made up
seems to be the most productive if fished with slight
sporadic twitching motion.

Irresistible
Flash
Tier: Ed Gallop
The
Irresistible was created by the well known fly tier, Joe Messinger, and was
originally named Deer Hair Drake and later renamed. The original was tied
with two tone deer hair body, dark (purple) back over a light (tan) belly, a
natural brown deer hair upright wing, and purple hackle.
Hook: Dry.
Tail: Brown hackle fibers.
Body: Deer hair packed and trimmed as shown.
Hackle: Brown with a couple strands of Krystal Flash added for wings.
This all purpose buoyant dry fly is a favorite of many anglers. Two small strands of Krystal Flash has been added, but if you don't like it, just snip them off.
There are many variations of the Irresistible but this one, less the Krystal Flash, is probably the most popular. Add a hair tail and hair wings and you have an Irresistible Wulff.

Zak Nymph
- Beadhead
Tier: Tom Sutcliffe
Tom Sutcliffe, an angler of over 40 years from Cape Town, Africa invented the Zak. He provided this photograph and the following instructions.
Tail: 4 strands of water mongoose.
Body: 2 stripped peacock quills, 1 peacock quill, strand of blue DMC thread, all
twisted into a rope.
Rib: Piece of fuse wire twisted lightly and wrapped to the body for an
attractive broken segmented effect.
Thorax: Dun hackle tied in by the tip. Twist this with the rest of
the rope and wrap to behind the bead.
Zak Nymph Variant
Tier: Ed Gallop
Hook:
Nymph.
Thread: Black Mono or thread.
Tail: Black hackle fibers.
Ribbing: Multi colored Flashabou.
Body: Peacock herl.
Hackle: Black hen palmered and roughly trimmed on top.
Head: Gold bead.
This is an alternative version of the Zak that I discovered from a friend who returned from a Cape Town fishing vacation. Although not original, he uses easily obtainable materials. I have used this version very successively for trout here in the USA.
